Cornell Basketball in the News: Gatlin's Teammate Gains Immediate Transfer Eligibility

Cornell's newest transfer, Anthony Gatlin.

The Associated Press broke the news that Centenary College's Chase Adams, a 5'10" guard and regining Summit League Defensive Player of the Year is transferring to Pitt of the Big East Conference. Because Centenary College has opted to drop its entire Athletics Department to the Division III level in two years due to financial restructuring at the school, the NCAA has granted Adams immediate eligibility and he will be able to suit up for Pitt this season without sitting out.

Cornell recently added as a transfer, Adams' teammate at Centenary, Anthony Gatlin, a 6'8" guard/forward. Gatlin has two years of eligibility remaining and is slated to sit out the 2009-2010 season.

In 2008-09, Gatlin started 16 of 27 games and averaged 4.7 points and 2.6 rebounds and over 18.0 minutes per game.

Gatlin played in 13 games last season where he played at least 20 minutes. In those 13 games of 20+ minutes, he averaged 28.7 minutes while posting 8.5 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. In the 4 games where he played at least 30 minutes, he averaged 13.5 points and 6.0 rebounds. On the season, Gatlin shot 41% from the floor and 38% from beyond the arc.

His most memorable peformance might have been on December 1, 2007. As a freshman starter for Centenary, Gatlin helped the Gents shock Texas Tech, 70-66. Texas Tech led 35-32 at halftime and opened the second half with a 14-3 run to lead 49-35. But Centenary scored the next 13 points, 8 of them from Gatlin. He made a 3-point shot, a 3-point play and a layup as Centenary got itself back into the ball game. Gatlin finished the game with 13 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals on 5/11 shooting from the floor in helping Centenary record the upset.
