Recruiting News (updated 11:02 a.m., 9.18.09)

Above, No. 3, Anthony Gatlin, is a 6'8" transfer from Centenary College sitting out the 2009-2010 season at Cornell pursuant to NCAA transfer regulations. Gatlin is one of the most unique players in the Ivy League. At a wiry 6'8"-- he is both a guard and a forward and can literally play four of the five positions on the floor. Below some recruiting news from around the Ivy League.

Laurent Rivard, a 6'5" wing from the Northfield Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts is visiting Harvard this weekend.

The Arizona Daily Star and its companion UA Sports blog combine for a pair of articles on Harvard recruiting prospect, Rod Odom, a 6'8" forward from the Middlesex School in Massachusetts. Odom's coach, Jamie Gallagher said Odom appears most interested in Louisville, Boston College, Virginia Tech, Vanderbilt and Arizona, but the prospect is still scheduled to go to Harvard next week on a visit with several other high profile national prospects. Odom said, "With Harvard, I feel like I have to look at it because I'm a good student."

The Indianapolis Star reports that Zionsville High Schook senior, 6'3" Jack Isenbarger will make his first official visit to Western Michigan on Saturday. He has offers from Cornell, Eastern Illinois, Miami (Ohio) and Western Michigan

The Minnesota Gophers landed Elliott Eliason, a 6'11" big man from Nebraska. Why are we reporting this news? For Cornell, this means that several of Minnesota's top high school frontcourt prospects, and there a few good ones, might have to start looking elsewhere for Division I opportunities. And Cornell sure loves Minnesota country.

Speaking of tall guys, Cornell desperately needs a new recruit with length who can rebound, defend and shot block. Jeff Foote graduates in May 2010 and while Cornell will still have a physical 6'9" Mark Coury back in '10-'11, along with 6'9" Aaron Osgood (who the program expects big things from despite his lack of playing time to date), both will be seniors next year. So finding a "big" in the high school class of 2010 is not a luxury, but a virtual requirement. Otherwise, Cornell needs to hope a transfer lands on its doorstep again.

ScoutHoops.com released its rankings of top frontcourt players in the western U.S. Somehow, Penn recruit, Kevin Panzer, 6'8" forward from Mission Viejo and Capistrano Valley HS was completely left off the list of top forwards (small and power), but Quaker low post prospect, Mike Kurtz, a 6'11" center from Woodcreek HS in Roseville, Ca. was ranked as the No. 9 center. Fellow Ivy prospect, 6'8" John McArthur of Concord, Ca., De La Salle HS was No. 5.
