Schedule Update: Siena Claims to Struggle to Find Games, But Refuses to Come to Ithaca

Pictured above, Cornell's Louis Dale, a mercurial 5'11" point guard, rocked Siena in Ithaca on November 25, 2007 for a tune of 20 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Cornell won the game 83-77. Due to a hamstring injury, Dale would not appear in the teams' meeting during 2008-2009 in Albany.

The Albany Times Union's Peter Iorizzo reports that Siena is struggling to fill the two remaining games on its schedule and that nobody wants to play the Saints due to the program's recent success winning two consecutive NCAA Tournament first round victories. Adam Chaskin, a Siena assistant was even quoted as stating, "We're a victim of our own success... Teams won't play us. They're scared that we're going to win and they're going to lose. [We]'ll play on Mars, if we have to."

Cornell hosted the Saints during 2007-2008 and paid the return visit to Siena last season as part of a two-year contract. Cornell won the first meeting between the squads, 83-77 in Ithaca on November 25, 2007. Hardly a homecourt advantage, the game was played during Thanksgiving weekend when Cornell students were away from campus due to the holiday.

Last season in Albany, exacting revenge, Siena turned a 4 point halftime lead over the Big Red into a convincing 74-56 win on November 22, 2008. But it should be noted that Cornell was without All-Ivy League starting point guard, Louis Dale.

Contrary to the above statements in the Albany Times Union report, sources close to the Siena program confirmed that Cornell and Siena engaged in preliminary discussions last spring about renewing their series. Logically, the series would start in Ithaca since Cornell visited Siena last season. But when the programs initially discussed renewing the series, Siena refused to renew the contract unless Cornell agreed to start the new series in Albany, thereby playing two consecutive years at Siena.

Thus far, there is no public confirmation that Siena and Cornell have reached an agreement to face one another during 2009-2010.
