Recruiting News

With dozens of AAU tournaments, skill camps, open gyms and other events taking place daily, Ivy League coaching staffs are spreading out across the country evaluating and courting high school talent. Below... some recruiting news from around the Ivy Leauge. Above, Cornell's Alex Tyler soars in Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Dave Telep of Scout.com reports that Tom Droney, a 6'5" wing from Pittsburgh committed to Davidson. Droney was among Harvard's top backcourt prospects. Other top Harvard prospects -- namely 6'9" Dwight Powell (IMG Academy, Brandeton, FL) and 6'8" Rod Odom (Middlesex School, MA) are also expected to commit elsewhere before the end of the summer. Both have received offers from elite academic schools in major BCS conferencces. Nevertheless, the Crimson are still pushing hard in their recruitment.

Telep is also reporting that Melvin Ejim, a 6'6" wing from Brewster Academy in Massachusetts now has offers from Iowa, Boston College and George Washington. Cornell is also in pursuit accoridng to several sources. Meanwhile, Telep notes that Brennan Wyatt, a speedy little 5'11" point guard from North Carolina has looked good this summer and predicts some offers from Ivy and Patriot schools. Wyatt is on Cornell's radar.

The Post Courier of South Carolina quotes The Cornell Basketball Blog with respect to Cornell's and The Citadel's recruitment of Ryan McCoy, a 6'6" forward in the class of 2011.

BasketballBuz.ca posts the news of Manny Sahota's commitment to Cornell. BasketballBuzz writes:
Manny Sahota has seen a lot of basketball talent roam through the halls of St. Marguerite d’Youville Secondary School in Brampton, Ontario as a student, only to see many of them jet off to U.S. prep schools in an attempt to increase exposure. With a great academic work ethic and a solid all-around game, Manny is heading to his Division 1 school the old fashioned way.

The 6’6” small forward verbally committed to Cornell University of the prestigious Ivy League Conference for the 2010-11 season, as he plans to return for a fifth year at d’Youville. Putting in an impressive performance at Cornell’s elite camp, the coaching staff recognized him as the best player. It didn’t take long for them to set up the commitment.
From the Northstar Basketball Blog, Josh Elbaum, a 6'4" guard with Northfield Mt. Hermon in Massachusetts is hearing from Yale, Brown, Lehigh, Western Michigan, and Navy. Of those, Lehigh, Western Michigan, and Navy have made offers. Elbaum is a postgrad student. Cornell showed interest while he was a senior at St. John the Baptist High School in Long Island.

Dockery Walker, a 6'5" wing of the Westtown School in Westtown, Pa is hearing from Cornell, Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth, Penn, Holy Cross, Boston University, St. Francis (PA), Fairfield, Vermont, and Robert Morris. From this group, he has offers from Columbia, Penn, Boston U., St. Francis (PA), and Fairfield, although he does not yet have a favorite. Walker, transferred to Westtown from Dover (DE) this past year.
