More Information on the Legends Classic

The Gazelle Group, the organizers of the Legends Classic, confirmed today for the The Cornell Basketball Blog the following concerning the format of the event.

Twelve teams will participate in the Legends Classic. It is expected that all twelve teams will be Division I members. Florida, Michigan State, UMass and Rutgers are serving as regional hosts. Three teams are assigned to each regional pod.

After each regional pod completes round robin play (two regional games for each participating team), the four host schools automatically advance to Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall for the "championship" and "consolation" rounds. The semifinal matchups are already determined. UMass will face Rutgers while Florida will take on Michigan State.

The remaining eight schools not headed to Atlantic City move on to the "consolation" or "subregional rounds" where the eight will be divided into two subregions. The two subregion hosts have yet to be announced.

In the subregions, each participating team will play two additional games against opponents in their pod. Accordingly, all twelve teams in the Legends Classic are guaranteed to play four games. And as an exempt tournament, particpation in the Legends Classic counts as only one game against Cornell's 28 game limitation per Ivy League and NCAA rules.

The following teams are reportedly participants in the Legends Classic: Florida (host), Michigan State (host), UMass (host), Rutgers(host), Vermont, Cornell, Drexel, Toledo, and Valparaiso, plus three additional teams.

While UMass, Toledo and Cornell were originally scheduled to fill the UMass region, due to travel/geographic concerns, Toledo was moved to the Michigan State region with the Spartans and Valparaiso.

Meanwhile, as Cornell and UMass remain in the UMass region, Drexel may possibly take the Toledo vacancy and join the Big Red and the Minutemen in the Mullins Center. The Dragons of the CAA were originally scheduled to play in the Rutgers region with Rutgers and Vermont.

Should Drexel not move to the UMass region, Vermont could potentially make the move due to its closer geographic proximity to Amherst.
