Recruiting News

Above, Cornell's Jon Jaques. Below, some recruiting news around the Ivy League.

DeaconSports.com reports that Griffin McKenzie, a 6'8" power forward from Cincinnati's Moeller High School has seen his recruitment explode over the last two weeks. “The last two weeks have been crazy but very exciting for me. It’s not anything like I thought it would be. It is a very exciting time for me. The phone is ringing constantly.” Just in the last two weeks, McKenzie has picked up offers from Ohio State, Vanderbilt, Xavier, Wake Forest, Northwestern, Providence, Tennessee, Western Kentucky, and Cincinnati. But McKenzie also held offers from a host of mid majors during the spring, including Cornell and Harvard.

In other recruiting news, 6'10" post, Carter Warnock of Seton Catholic High School in Chandler, Arizona, received a scholarship offer to Weber State this week according to ArizonaVarsity.com. Warnock is also getting recruitment attention from Cornell, Santa Clara, Drake, Northern Colorado, and UC Riverside.

Stanford received two verbals this weekend according to Scout.com. Both commitments have significant Ivy implications.

First, Aaron Bright, a 5'10" point guard from Bellevue, Washington committed to the Cardinal over an offer from Harvard. Additionally, Stanford is bringing on board this season from the class of 2009, Gabe Harris, a 6'2" point guard from Birmingham, Alabama. Harris attended the same Altamont School as Cornell's Louis Dale and passed up an offer from the Big Red in order to play at Stanford. Harris had the ability to star in the Ivy League. He will now have to compete with Bright for minutes at point guard for the majority of his career.

Stanford also received a verbal from 6'10" John Gage of Vashon Island, Washington. The Gage commitment takes away a frontcourt scholarship that Stanford could've offered Dwight Powell and/or Rod Odom. This is good news for the Harvard folks that hope to land either Powell or Odom for their class.

The Providence Journal, New England Recruiting Report and Northstar Basketball all have stories on Matt Brown's verbal commitment to Harvard this week.
