Jake Matthews (pictured right), committed to Cornell during September out of Greensburg Salem High School near Pittsburgh, Pa. He is a 6'2" senior combo guard. A three-year starter for the Golden Lions, he was named by the Pittsburgh Post Gazette to its Terrific Ten all star team for the 2008-2009 season and was called, "One of the best shooters in the WPIAL." He averaged 16.1 points per game last season and had 815 career points at the close of his junior year. He elevated his game in the state playoffs and averaged better than 20 points per game during a Cinderella run where his team finished as the state runner-ups in AAA, falling before 5,000 fans in the title game to Philadelphia's Archbishop Carroll High School, which is coached by former Penn player, Paul Romanucyzk.
Matthews told PittsburghLive.com, "Cornell has won the Ivy League title the past two seasons and has a great program. The Ivy League experience is another reason why I picked Cornell." While Cornell is the only school to make an offer to Matthews as of late August, he did receive interest from Columbia, Princeton, Air Force, Youngstown State, and Tennessee-Martin. "I'm glad I decided early. I know where I'm going and there will be no distractions for my senior season."
