Basketball player to the Ivy League
Greensburg Salem senior guard Jake Matthews made a verbal commitment to Cornell yesterday. Matthews, a 6-foot-2 sharpshooter, averaged 15 points a game last season and opened eyes of some colleges during Greensburg Salem's run to the PIAA Class AAA championship game. Matthews averaged 18 points in the playoffs.
"What's interesting is that this is my 27th year at Greensburg Salem, and we've had some pretty good players," said Greensburg Salem coach Paul Sapotichne. "But Jake is the first to go to a Division I school."
Cornell is the defending Ivy League champion.
Matthews' brother, Paul, was a standout guard at Greensburg Salem a few years ago. Their father and grandfather are both named Bernie. Bernie the grandfather won more than 500 games as Saint Vincent College's coach from 1968-2003. Bernie the father played at Gateway and then at Samford in Alabama.
