Greensburg Salem senior Jake Matthews always has been a fan of Ivy League basketball.

Now he will get a chance to be part of it.

Matthews verbally committed to Cornell University on Tuesday after making a visit to the campus in Ithaca, N.Y.

He is the first Greensburg Salem player under veteran coach Paul Sapotichne to commit to a Division I program and is the third player from last year's PIAA Class AAA runner-up to announce intentions to play college basketball. Point guard Chris Klimchock and center Bobby Davis are now part of the Edinboro University program.

"Cornell has won the Ivy League title the past two seasons and has a great program," Matthews said. "The Ivy League experience is another reason why I picked Cornell."

Cornell is the only school to make an offer to Matthews, who has a 4.0 grade-point average. But he did receive interest from Columbia, Princeton, Air Force, Youngstown State, Tennessee-Martin and Seton Hill.

He said the state playoff run and his important baskets against Farrell and Hampton exposed him to college coaches.

"I definitely think the state playoff run helped me," Matthews said. "I'm glad I decided early. I know where I'm going and there will be no distractions for my senior season."

Sapotichne said he's happy for Matthews because he has worked hard.

Matthews averaged 16.5 points per game as a junior, but more than 20 points per game in the state playoffs.

Matthews said Cornell will graduate nine seniors next year, and he will have an opportunity to play early in his college career.

"I'll definitely compete for a position," Matthews said. "I'm excited about the opportunity."
