News and Notes: Around the Ivy League

In news and notes around the Ivy League...

The fine line distinction between the preseason and the actual season. All eight Ivy schools seem optimistic about their upcoming seasons. But how long will that optimism last? At least for right now, all of the teams appear confident that they will surprise the rest of the league.

Penn's coaching staff is reporting that most of the squad's players have arrived on campus with a few remaining bodies expected to land in West Philly later this week. Penn had excellent representation of its team at various NCAA sanctioned summer leagues in Philadelphia. Reports out of Philadelphia are that Darren Smith (ACL) and Andreas Schreiber (shoulder) are on the mend and are expected to be huge contributors in '09-'10. If healthy, Penn will make noise this season.

Harvard has commenced their "Player Development Sessions" with players such as Jeremy Lin, Oliver McNally and Doug Miller participating with Harvard's coaching staff.

Cornell Basketball has big plans for the new Cornell Athletics You Tube account. Fans should expect to see some interesting content during the season, including possible coach interviews and tours of the team's facilities.

Although Cornell Football has a game in Ithaca on Saturday, November 14, Cornell's lead play-by-play announcer, Barry "Big Red" Leonard will instead make the trip to Alabama for Cornell's season opener in basketball. With Anthony Grant making his coaching debut for the Crimson Tide that Saturday night, fans should expect a rocking atmosphere in Tuscaloosa. The game is a homecoming for Cornell's Louis Dale, a native of Birmingham.

Penn's game at Duke on December 31 will be broadcast on ESPN2. The Cameron Crazies should be noticeably absent, however, due to the student winter recess.

ESPN's Andy Katz mentions the injury suffered by St. John's senior, Anthony Mason, Jr. in the Red Storm's game against Cornell in last season's NIT Season Tip Off.

Columbia's Dan Trepanier, a class of '09 grad, wins an award for personal grooming.

Also, in Legends Classic news, while Cornell heads to the competitive Drexel pod in the consolation round with Vermont and Toledo, the other consolation pod will be hosted by Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Georgia with Troy State, Valparaiso and another team to be named at a later date by the Gazelle Group, the tournament organizers.
