Red Drops White in Men's Basketball Intrasquad Scrimmage

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Senior Jeff Foote had 16 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots to lead five double figure scorers as the Red beat the White in Saturday's intrasquad scrimmage at Newman Arena in Bartels Hall. In all, eight different players scored at least eight points for the White team, which used its dominance on the boards as the Big Red showcased the group that will look to grab its third straight Ancient Eight title this coming season.

"I think for a week in, I was pleased with the execution, but you expect that from a veteran team," said Steve Donahue, the Robert E. Gallagher '44 Head Coach of Cornell Basketball. "We played fast."

In its first public appearance, the teams were divided between the two teams, playing a full 40 minute game. It was quickly evident that the 7-0 fifth-year senior andwould be the difference. Foote ended the day hitting 7-of-8 field goals, including a pair of thunderous dunks, and added two assists and four offensive rebounds for good measure. Junior guard Max Groebe chipped in with 12 points, three rebounds and three assists, and seniors Louis Dale and Jon Jaques netted 11 points apiece. Dale added six assists, five rebounds and two steals in the Red's victory. Also in double figures was senior Peter Reynolds with 10 points.

"I think you see Jeff Foote get better everytime he gets on the basketball court," Donahue said. "When he's that focused on the game, he can be so dominating on both ends of the court. I think Louis played well too. I think you see his conditioning being so much better than it was last year. Max (Groebe) made a lot of shots and Adam (Wire) brings so many things to the floor that don't get in the box score."

Besides the double figure scorers, Wire provided great energy with eight points, nine rebounds and three steals, Errick Peck made his collegiate debut a good one with eight points, two rebounds and a decisive blocked shot, and Alex Hill scored with points. Junior transfer Anthony Gatlin, a transfer from Centenary College, had four points and five assists to round out the squad.

Leading the way for the White were holdovers Chris Wroblewski (13 points, five assists, three rebounds, two steals) and Ryan Wittman (10 points, three rebounds, two assists in just 18 minutes). Senior Geoff Reeves had nine points and three steals, while classmate Alex Tyler posted nine points, five rebounds and two steals. Senior Andre Wilkins posted seven points and four rebounds. Also getting into the scoring column was freshman Pete McMillan with five points, junior Aaron Osgood with four points and five rebounds and Josh Figini with three points. Freshman Eitan Chemerinski notched two steals off the bench.

The Red team held a decisive 46-23 edge on the backboards, including a 28-11 advantage in the first 20 minutes as the Red team built a 44-25 halftime edge. The score was reset in the second half, with the Red squad taking a competitive 44-35 edge.Wroblewski had a team-best 11 points after halftime for the White team.

"Three weeks from today we play," Donahue said, "and this gives us some film to evaluate players and start to formulate who will be in your top eight or top nine. Now we'll start putting things in specifically for the season."

A pair of Cornell players, senior Mark Coury and freshman Miles Asafo-Adjei, sat out the game with minor injuries.

Cornell opens its 2009-10 season at Alabama on Saturday, Nov. 14 at Alabama.
