Cornell's Errick Peck MVP of Indiana/Kentucky All Star Game

Cornell recruit, Errick Peck, a 6'6" forward from Indianapolis Cathedral High School was named MVP in the first of two games in the Indiana vs. Kentucky All Star Classic Series Below are excerpts from news articles covering the game played Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Errick Peck (far left, No. 13) led the Indiana team in points (16), rebounds (12) and blocks (3).

From the Indianapolis Star:
Cathedral star Peck, a late selection, leads victory

Eight weeks ago, David Wood wouldn't have known Errick Peck if he had been standing five feet in front of him. Wood, coach of The Indianapolis Star Indiana Boys All-Stars, is happy to know him now.Peck, one of the last players -- if not the last player -- selected to the All-Star team, registered team highs with 16 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots as the Indiana All-Stars pulled away for a 78-65 win over the Kentucky All-Stars on Saturday night in front of 5,775 fans at Conseco Fieldhouse.

It has been that kind of week for the 6-6 Cathedral standout. Peck led his team in scoring in both games against the Indiana Junior All-Stars earlier this week.

"Eight weeks ago, I'd never even heard of the kid," Wood said of Peck. "Can I be frank? The selection process is a very subjective thing, but let's be honest -- Errick Peck was not on the radar early. He earned his way on the team."

Peck was part of a group that was on the floor when the Indiana All-Stars turned the game with a 23-3 run to start the second half. Kentucky, which saw its losing streak in Indianapolis extended to 13 games, took a 37-35 lead to halftime. But Peck and Batesville's Colt Ryan combined to score 17 of Indiana's first 19 points to start the second half and light a spark that had been missing early.

Kentucky Mr. Basketball Jon Hood, a Kentucky recruit, scored a game-high 20 points. No other Kentucky player reached double figures in points.

Though he said he'd never heard of him before this week, Hood had high praise for Peck, calling him "a guy whose motor never stops."

On a roster with players headed to Indiana, Louisville, North Carolina State and Purdue, it was the kid headed to Cornell who made the biggest impact.

"He was outstanding all night," Wood said. "I thought he really imposed his will on their team in the second half and our guys committed to getting the ball in to him."
From the Louisville Courier Journal:
Peck, Ryan lead Indiana All-Stars in win over Kentucky

INDIANAPOLIS — The boys' Indiana All-Star basketball team is loaded with talented players headed to big-name NCAA Division I schools such as Indiana, Louisville, Purdue and North Carolina State.

But on Saturday the players headed to Evansville and Cornell lifted the Hoosiers over Kentucky 78-65 before 5,775 fans in Conseco Fieldhouse.

Cathedral's Errick Peck — a Cornell signee — was one of the last players chosen for the team but had 16 points and 12 rebounds and was named MVP. Batesville's Colt Ryan, an Evansville signee, scored all 12 of his points in the second half.

"I think (Peck and Ryan) are going to make the biggest impact on their college teams immediately," said Indiana coach David Wood of West Lafayette. "And that's because of their abilities and college choices."

The two showed off on a big stage in the first of the two-game summer series.

The 6-foot-7 Peck made 7 of 11 shots from the field and also led the team with three blocked shots. Wood said he was "one of the last guys" picked for the team.

"Eight weeks ago I had never even heard of the kid," Wood said. "Can I be honest? Errick Peck was not on the radar."

"Those are two really good players, two really good scorers," said Kentucky Mr. Basketball Jon Hood of Madisonville, who scored 20. "Errick [Peck] never lets off the pedal."

The rematch is Sunday at 5:30p.m. at Bellarmine.

"We committed to going inside," Wood said. "A lot of (the offense) came off of us going to Errick. He imposed his will on their team in the second half, and our other guys committed to getting the ball in there."
From the Chicago Tribune:
Peck leads Indiana past Kentucky

INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana All-Stars coach David Wood couldn't have told anyone who Errick Peck was two months ago.

Peck, a Cornell recruit out of Indianapolis Cathedral, eventually made himself known to his coach. He then introduced himself to the rest of the state on Saturday by posting 16 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks as Indiana beat Kentucky 78-65.

"Eight weeks ago, I had never even heard of the kid," Wood said. "The selection process is a very subjective thing, but let's face it, Errick Peck was not on the radar early. Errick Peck was probably one of the last two guys we picked for this team."

Peck had just two points in seven minutes in the first half, but he did enough to earn the start in the second half. He had 14 points and 10 rebounds in 15 minutes after the break.

"He was outstanding, certainly in the second half," Wood said. "I thought he really, really imposed his will on their team and our other guys committed to getting the ball in there."

The teams will play again Sunday in Louisville.

Kentucky led 37-35 at halftime, but Indiana started the second half on a 9-1 run. A 3-pointer by Ryan gave Indiana a 44-38 lead and forced Kentucky to call timeout.

Peck converted a 3-point play, then Ryan made another 3-pointer to increase Indiana's lead to 54-40 six minutes into the second half. The game was never close after that.

Peck felt confident once he got into the flow of the game.

"Once I got into a rhythm, I started to find my shot, hit a couple tough jump shots and then from there we just rolled," Peck said. "One-on-one moves, I felt like they really couldn't stop me. From there, the outside shot opened up."
From Kentucky.com/Lexington Herald-Leader:

...Indiana had a considerable size advantage down low with Errick Peck (6-foot-7, Patrick Bade (6-8), Stephan Van Treese (6-9) and Derek Elston 6-9. Kentucky, meanwhile, had one player 6-7 or taller: Adair County's Darren Ballou.

***

Peck, a Cornell signee, had 14 of his 16 points and 10 of his 12 rebounds after halftime.

***

Wood said Peck was selected for one of the final two slots on the team.

From the Ft. Wayne News Sentinel:
INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana All-Stars rode a pair of players to a convincing 78-65 win over their Kentucky counterparts that were much less heralded than most of the players on the court.

Playing in front of nearly 6,000 fans at Conseco Fieldhouse, Indiana's Colt Ryan and Errick Peck sent notice to all who witnessed, that though they aren't headed to major college programs, they can play.

The Hoosiers trailed 37-35 at halftime, as Kentucky received explosive offense from its Mr. Basketball Jon Hood.

Hood, a Kentucky recruit, hit six of his eight shots in the first half en route to 14 points, including Kentucky's first nine. He repeatedly blew by Marion's Scott Wood, who was having a serious amount of difficulty in containing him.

In the second half, the Hoosier coaches made an adjustment and put Ryan on Hood, and the Batesville star limited Hood to just six second-half points, as well as contributed significantly at the offensive end.

The Evansville recruit scored all 12 of his points in the second half, one in which Indiana outscored Kentucky 43-28.

Also excelling was Player of the Game, Peck, who will play his college ball at Cornell.

The Cathedral alum pounded the opposition inside and out, finishing with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
From the Montgomery County Paper:
Indiana's Errick Peck (Cathedral) was named the team's Most Valuable Player.

He scored a team-high 16 points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds, with 14 points and 10 rebounds coming in the second half.
From HoosierHQ.com:
MVP Errick Peck: 7-for-11 (0-for-1 from 3) 2-for-3 from the line, 12 rebounds, 16 points, 3 blocks... Peck, a 6-foot-7 forward who will play for Cornell, was really effective against Kentucky’s efforts to double-down in the post.
From the Terre Haute Tribune Star:
Indianapolis Cathedral’s Errick Peck — Cornell-bound — scored 16 points and 12 rebounds and was the Player of the Game.

“Eight weeks ago, I had never even heard of the kid,” coach David Wood said. “The selection process is a very subjective thing, but let’s face it, Errick Peck was not on the radar early. Errick Peck was probably one of the last two guys we picked for this team.”
From the Louisville Courier Journal:
All-Star thoughts - day one

Errick Peck was the last player picked for the Indiana team and was clearly the best player for the Hoosiers on this night.
From the West Lafayette Journal & Courier:
Cornell recruit leads Indiana boys past Kentucky

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Cathedral’s Errick Peck had 16 points and 12 rebounds as the Indiana All-Stars beat Kentucky 78-65 on Saturday.
Additionally, the Indianapolis Star kept a running blog of the game and called Peck's performance "impressive"-- also, click here for a video clip covering the game from Fox News 59-Indianapolis.

Lastly, here is a fitting quote for Peck this past week:

"Errick Peck had an excellent game. Any time you can get a double-double and rebound the way he does ... he is just an awesome player."-- Patrick Bade (Purdue recruit) as told to West Lafayette Journal & Courier.
