Cornell Basketball Officially Announces Incoming Recruiting Class for 2009-2010

ITHACA, N.Y. -- With back-to-back Ivy League championship in its pocket, the Cornell men's basketball team will add six players to the program this fall, including five high school seniors and a Division I transfer. Head coach Steve Donahue announced that Miles Asafo-Adjei, Eitan Chemerinski, Josh Figini, Peter McMillan and Errick Peck will enroll at Cornell in the fall as freshmen, while junior Anthony Gatlin will join the Big Red family from Centenary College.

"Our coaching staff needed to address the fact that we will be losing one of the largest and most talented classes in the history of the Ivy League, and we feel among this group will be the centerpieces who will keep the Cornell program competing for conference titles. This group is individually gifted, but also have shown to be outstanding teammates who make those around them better. They will have the chance to learn from the winningest senior class in school history while at the same time competing for playing time and making the rest of our team better at practice."

G Miles Asafo-Adjei * 6-2/170 * Antioch, Tenn. (The Ensworth School)
Asafo-Adjei was a two-time all-region selection at The Ensworth School, helping direct the team to a state title as a senior. A three-sport athlete (basketball, football and track and field), Asafo-Adjei was named to all-tournament teams at five different in-season tournaments, including capturing the Carolyn Dunstan Memorial Sportsmanship Award for the Naples Daily News Gulfshore Shootout.

F Eitan Chemerinski * 6-8/195 * Potomac, Md. (Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School)
Chemeriski was a McDonald's High School All-America nominee as a senior at the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School. The conference player of the year averaged 20 points, nine rebounds, six blocked shots and four assists as a senior after notching 19 points, nine rebounds and four assists per game as a junior. An honorable mention all-state selection by the Maryland Gazette in each of his final two seasons, he was an honorable mention All-Met pick by the Washington Post in 2009 and was picked to play in the 2009 McDonald's Roundball Classic Mid-Atlantic Premier All-Star game. The two-time first-team all-league pick served as team captain during his final season.

F Josh Figini * 6-9/200 * Chisago Lakes, Minn. (Chisago Lakes HS)
Figini averaged 24.7 points, 13.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game en route to third-team all-state honors by the St. Paul Press as a senior at Chisago Lakes HS. One of 15 finalists for the state?s Mr. Basketball award, he was ranked among the state's top 25 players by MinnesotaPreps.com as a senior. A nominee for McDonald's High School All-America honors, Figini was an academic all-state pick by the Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association and was invited to compete in the Minnesota All-Star Series. As a junior, Figini averaged 23 points, 12 rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots per game while hitting 55 percent from the field, 42 percent from 3-point range and 76 percent from the charity stripe. A three-time all-conference selection, Figini was a second-team all-state pick as a junior by the Minnesota Basketball News. He was named Player of the Week once as a junior by the Minneapolis Tribune and twice by the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

F Anthony Gatlin * 6-8/180 * Pearland, Texas (Pearland HS/Centenary College)
In two seasons at Centenary, Gatlin saw action in 58 games with 28 starts, averaging a combined 4.5 points and 2.5 rebounds. He shot 43 percent from the floor, 38 percent from 3-point range and 71 percent from the free-throw line. In 2008-09 as a sophomore, Gatlin averaged 4.7 points and 2.6 rebounds in 27 games played, including 16 starts. He also registered 13 blocked shots, 11 assists and nine steals. He shot Gatlin had a career-best 16 points at Northwestern State and a career-high nine rebounds against Alcorn State. As a freshman in 2007-08. Gatlin averaged 4.4 points and 2.4 rebounds while playing in all 31 contests with 12 starts. He averaged 19.6 minutes per game, while chipping in 14 assists, 12 steals and 11 blocked shots during the year. He scored a career-high 13 points in the Gents 70-66 win over Texas Tech and pulled down eight boards against IUPUI. Gatlin was a first team all-district performer as a senior for his district championship Pearland HS team after playing his first two seasons of high school basketball at Seoul American HS in Seoul, South Korea. He led his team to league titles in both seasons at SAHS, earning all-league honors as a sophomore. He was named conference finals most valuable player as a sophomore in helping his squad to the Far East basketball title. He also was an all-league volleyball playuer at middle blocker and competed in the high jump in track and field.

F Peter McMillan * 6-7/220 * Brentwood, Calif. (Northfield Mt. Hermon School)
McMillan was invited to compete in the Academic All-American Classic following a postgraduate year at Northfield Mt. Hermon School in New Hampshire, where he averaged 6.4 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists on a team that featured four Division I recruits. He shot 41 percent from the floor, 34 percent from 3-point range and 74 percent from the free-throw line. McMillan played at Brentwood HS, where he was a second-team all-league pick as a junior.

F Errick Peck * 6-6/210 * Indianapolis, Ind. (Cathedral HS)
Peck averaged 14.4 points and 11.1 rebounds per game as a senior at Cathedral HS, earning first-team all-city and honorable mention all-state honors. He was selected to participate in the Indiana-Kentucky All-Star series and the North-South Indiana All-Star game in 2009. The McDonald's High School All-America nominee was a second-team all-city selection by the Indianapolis Star as a junior after posting 13.5 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.

The Big Red posted a 21-10 mark, claimed its second straight Ivy League title with an 11-3 record and became the first Ivy League school other than Penn or Princeton to earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament in consecutive years. Cornell set team records for points (2,281), 3-pointers (241) and blocked shots (121) this past season. The Big Red will return all five starters and eight of the team's top nine scorers for the 2009-10 campaign.
