News and Notes

Below, some news and notes...
  • Congratulations to former Cornell assistant Zach Spiker in yet another win in his young head coaching career. Spiker's Cadets defeated Harvard on Monday night, 56-53 after Army defeated Princeton over the weekend.
  • The Seton Hall basketball blog, Gonzo Ball recaps some of Seton Hall's publicity after defeating Cornell.

Following their impressive road victory at Cornell, Andy Katz shows the Pirates some love in the national spotlight. Be sure to check out his Weekly Watch column for ESPN where he mentions the Hall several times.

In his player of the week award, Jeremy Hazell checks in right behind John Wall and DeMarcus Cousin:
Jeremy Hazell, Jr., G, Seton Hall: The Pirate that doesn't get the pub scored 33 points in Seton Hall's impressive 89-79 road win at Cornell.
Missed opportunity:
Cornell: The Big Red had started the season with great road wins for an Ivy League team at Alabama and UMass. But neither of those teams will be in the NCAA tournament. Seton Hall might be, and the Big Red missed their chance to secure a win over a Big East team when they lost at home to the Pirates, 89-79.
Wins that will matter in march:
Michigan State over Gonzaga; Syracuse over Cal and North Carolina in NYC; Ohio State over Cal in NYC; North Carolina over Ohio State in NYC; Seton Hall at Cornell
Mike Vorkunov, of New Jersey Newsroom, takes a look at the weekend that was around the college basketball scene in New Jersey, specifically the performance of the Pirates and Scarlet Knights:
Win of the weekend: This one belongs to the Pirates. Bobby Gonzalez took a chance going up to Ithaca, N.Y. to play a Cornell team that is certainly among the top 50 in the country.
The Cornell Daily Sun speaks with players and Big Red coach, Steve Donahue, following the loss to the Pirates:
"We lost tonight because we didn’t play well. They played well, they played better than us,” Donahue said. “I’m disappointed we lost, but in reality, I think in two months we’re going to look back at this game and say, ‘A Big East team came in here, and they were excited that they beat us, and we learned from it, and we became a better basketball team because of it."
Alex Kucczynski-Brown, a Cornell blogger, was impressed with Herb Pope's performance. Creative title to the piece, Alex.
In three contests with the Pirates, Pope has been averaging a double-double with 10.7 points and 12 rebounds per game. Last Sunday, he picked up 15 points and 17 rebounds at Monmouth. According to Cornell head coach Steve Donahue, Pope is “a very good player in terms of basketball IQ,” and is particularly dangerous when it comes to passing.
After destroying California and North Carolina on back-to-back nights, Mike Waters of The Post-Standard reports that Jim Boheim issued a stern warning to his squad:
“I told them one thing,” Boeheim said. “Tuesday night is going to be the toughest game they’ve had all year, so hopefully they are ready for that.”
Tomorrow's game at the Carrier Dome is especially important to Seton Hall. After beating the Big Red by 10 points in Ithaca, it will be beneficial to the Pirates if Cornell can play Syracuse tough. Imagine if Cornell can go on the road and steal a victory against the hottest team in the nation, still think Seton Hall's win won't matter come March? It will.
  • CBS News 3 (Springfield, Mass) shows more highlights of Cornell's victory over UMass on 11/18. The highlights come after those from the UMass victory over Arkansas-Ft. Smith.
