Additional Media Previewing Cornell at Syracuse

Tonight's Cornell at Syracuse game is "televised" on ESPN360. Below, some additional media coverage of the game.

From the SportsNetwork:
Cornell (2-1) at (10) Syracuse (4-0)

FACTS & STATS: Site: Carrier Dome (33,000) -- Syracuse, New York. Television: ESPN360. Home Record: Cornell 0-1, Syracuse 2-0. Away Record: Cornell 2-0, Syracuse 0-0. Neutral Record: Cornell 0-0, Syracuse 2-0. Conference Record: Cornell 0-0, Syracuse 0-0. Series Record: Syracuse leads, 85-31.

GAME NOTES: Coming off the 2K Sports Classic title, the undefeated Syracuse Orange find themselves in the top-10 this week and will put their lofty ranking on the line, as they welcome the Cornell Big Red to the Carrier Dome for a non-conference showdown this evening.

Jim Boeheim's Orange are a perfect 4-0 on the young season and went from unranked to the 10th-ranked team in the country with impressive wins over both California (95-73) and North Carolina (87-71) to claim the Coaches vs. Cancer title last week. This is the start of a four-game homestand that will continue until December 10th when Syracuse takes on Florida in Tampa as part of the Big East/SEC Challenge.

Steve Donahue's Big Red are 2-1 on the season, opening the year with a pair of impressive road wins at Alabama (71-67) and at UMass (74-61). However, the team opened up its home slate last Friday with an 89-79 setback to Seton Hall. The loss halted the team's 21-game home win streak. Following this matchup, Cornell will head to Philadelphia to take part in the Legends Classic.

The Orange own an 85-31 edge in the all-time series with the Big Red and have won the last 31 meetings between these two teams. The Big Red have not defeated Syracuse since the 1968-69 campaign. Cornell is 1-17 all-time at the Carrier Dome and 0-17 against the Orange. Its only win came against St. Francis (PA) in the 2005 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

The Big Red have shown that they can play with just about any conference, already posting wins over the SEC and Atlantic 10, while hanging tough with the Big East thus far. The team has a solid quartet of scoring options in Ryan Wittman (17.0 ppg), Louis Dale (13.7 ppg), Jeff Foote (11.0 ppg, 8.7 rpg) and Chris Wroblewski (10.0 ppg). However, after that the scoring pool dries up fast. Still, the team is shooting a respectable .451 from the floor through the first three games, resulting in 74.7 ppg. Wittman erupted for 24 points and Wroblewski poured in 22, but it wasn't enough to earn the victory against Seton Hall last time out. Adam Wire came off the bench to chip in 11 points, but Cornell was outscored 24-12 at the free-throw line, a big factor in the setback.

Junior Wes Johnson was named the 2K Sports Classic MVP after finishing with 25 points and eight rebounds in a rather easy victory over the defending national champions in the tournament final last week. Johnson averaged 21 points and 9.5 rebounds in the two victories in New York City, after a 17-point, 11- rebound effort against California. It was a 22-1 run to open up the second half that put the game out of reach. Joining Johnson in double figures were Arinze Onuaku (15 pts), Kris Joseph (12 pts), Andy Rautins (11 pts) and Brandon Triche (11 pts). The Orange shot .544 from the floor in the game and despite getting outscored 19-4 at the free-throw line, forced UNC into 19 costly turnovers and held the Tar Heels to just 38.1 percent accuracy from the floor. After four games, the Orange are averaging 89.2 ppg, with five players in double figures. Johnson headlines the group at 17.3 ppg. Onuaku is next (13.8 ppg), followed by Scoop Jardine (11.5 ppg), Rautins (10.3 ppg) and Triche (10.0 ppg).

The Orange are playing at a ridiculous level right now and there is little chance that the Big Red will end their long skein against Syracuse here.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Syracuse 88, Cornell 61

From CuseOrange.com:

As Steve pointed out, last weekend was a great time to be a ‘Cuse fan. The football team cranked out a solid victory over Rutgers on Senior Day, and the basketball team put to rest all sour grapes over losing out on Tobias Harris by stomping a pair of ranked teams on consecutive days in front of a national television audience and vaulted all the way to the top ten. The leap from 24th to 10th is the third largest in the history of the AP poll and on Tuesday night, the Orange returns home from their triumphant weekend to face the Cornell Big Red at the Dome.

The 2009 Ivy League champs put the Orange in a deep hole last season, but not deep enough, as SU rallied from a 16-point deficit to dodge the upset. That game is probably better remembered for the 3-point clinic that Ryan Wittman put on. Wittman went absolutely ballistic, putting up 33 points on 12-28 shooting and canning nine treys. He’s back at it this year, with an 11-27 mark from long range over the first three games of the season, especially contributing in a big way against Alabama.

Senior Louis Dale is another player to watch out for. The second leading scorer on the team, Dale is equally capable as Wittman of catching fire. The Orange has a robust advantage in size down low, so the focus will be shutting down Cornell’s three point shooters.

The Big Red will need another scorching night from Wittman, as well as Dale and Chris Wroblewski, to stand a chance in this one. SU’s airtight zone defense is allowing its opponents to shoot just 35.7% from the floor and 24.1% from behind the three point line. Cornell is catching SU at the worst possible time – at home, coming off two of the biggest November victories a team could have. Given SU’s expected dominance in the back of the zone, I can’t see this one being close if Cornell shoots less than 40% from three.

In previous years, I’d be a little leery of the Orange getting too comfortable with their egos as inflated by rankings, thus becoming vulnerable to a team like Cornell, but the unselfish nature of this team leads me to believe otherwise. The spotlight shines a target on SU’s back, so there can’t be any letting up. I look for the Orange to use this opportunity to tune up their rebounding and regain some confidence on that front and for the perimeter defense to shine in another test.

There probably won’t be a recap of this one due to the holiday coming up, so I wish everyone a *tremendous* Thanksgiving filled with great times spent with family and starchy goodness.

Prediction: SU 89, Cornell 65

From the RushTheCourt.net, Cornell @ Syracuse is the Tivo game of the day:

After last week when we really kicked off the season, our list of games this week is a little weak to be quite blunt primarily because of the Thanksgiving holiday break. Don’t worry though. It’s not all football games and turkey. There are some interesting games this week that are worth following even if you are travelling (or like some of us here) working during the week. Today we only have one game worth Tivo-ing, but it is one of the more intriguing games so far this season.

Cornell at #9 Syracuse at 7 PM on ESPN360.com: We mentioned this game in our post naming Syracuse as our Team of the Week. Everybody has been praising the Orange (and for good reason), but those who follow college basketball closely know that they could very easily lose to the Big Red, which is something I am sure that Jim Boeheim has stressed to his players since the morning after their huge win over UNC. After their wins over Caland UNC this past week everybody knows about the Orange. They have one of the best frontcourts in the nation with Wesley Johnson, Rick Jackson, Kris Joseph, and Arinze Onuaku complimented by some outstanding perimeter play (so far) from Scoop Jardine, Andy Rautins, and Brandon Triche. The country isn’t quite as familiar with Cornell who have already notched impressive road wins at Alabama and UMass before falling by 10 at home against Seton Hall. The Big Red are led by Ryan Wittman (17 PPG and 4 APG)–one of the nation’s top players that the casual fan doesn’t know about–who is complimented by fellow seniors Louis Dale (13.7 PPG and 3.7 APG) and Jeff Foote(11.0 PPG and 8.7 RPG). If the Orange need any motivation to get up for this game, Boeheim will just have to remind them of last year when they barely outlasted Wittman and his game-high 33 points before pulling away late. We expect the Orange to win this one since they are the more talented team and are playing at home, but don’t be surprised to see Cornell hanging around as I’m sure their players have been looking forward to this game for quite some time as it is the second biggest game on their schedule trailing only their trip to Allen Fieldhouse on January 6th to take on preseason #1 Kansas. While I think that motivation will aid the Big Red, it probably won’t be enough to make up for their massive disadvantage inside where they won’t have an answer for the Orange big men and Johnson in particular.

From Syracuse.com's Brent Axe:
How about some podcasts to get you ready for the Syracuse/Cornell match up at the Carrier Dome Tuesday night?

Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim and Cornell head coach Steve Donahue joined me "On the Block" on ESPN Radio 1260 on Monday to talk about their teams and preview the game.

Syracuse shot into the Top 10 in both the AP and Coaches poll after knocking off North Carolina and California at Madison Square Garden this past weekend.

"Well, I hope they are right this time." Boeheim cracked when asked about his team's new ranking. "We have played well. We played well in our two home games defensively. We continued it on the road and that helps our offense. We shot the ball well. North Carolina is a young team, they have a lot of things to work out. It is a good win, but it is not the kind of win beating North Carolina last year would have been, but the fact that we played so well is a good thing."

The full interview with Boeheim is right here.

Cornell head coach Steve Donahue also came on the radio with me on Monday.

In four games, Syracuse has yet to allow an opponent to shoot better than 40 percent from the field or 30 percent from 3-point range and Donahue has noticed how dedicated to defense Coach Boeheim's team has been so far...

"What he has done in a short period of time is incredible. Obviously, people down here talk about the LeMoyne game. Well, in such a short period of time they have done such a great job. In my opinion, this is the best (Syracuse) team that I will face in my ten years at this point of the season. Now, obviously played the national championship team (in 2002-03) but they weren't this good this early"

Here is the full chat with Donahue.

Syracuse and Cornell Prep For Tuesday Clash

The Syracuse men's basketball team can't be underestimated anymore. SU rose all the way up from 24th to #9 in the latest ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll.

The Orange cracked the top 10 thanks a pair of big wins last week against 4th ranked North Carolina and #12 California. The 'Cuse can't get complacent because they've got a clash with Cornell tomorrow. The Big Red are coming off a tough loss to Seton Hall on Friday, but they almost always keep it close with the Orange. Last year, Cornell led SU at the half but the ‘Cuse ended up edging out a 10 point win. Tip off is set for 7pm tomorrow at the Carrier Dome.
