News and Notes

In news and notes...

Jeff Goodman of FoxSports.com notes that three players transferred from Centenary College basketball program and are eligible immediately at their new Division I homes. They include, Gary Redus Jr. (South Alabama), Chase Adams (Pittsburgh) and Cornell's Anthony Gatlin. Irrespective of any NCAA eligibility decision, Gatlin is expected to sit-out the 2009-2010 season at Cornell and preserve his two years of eligibility for the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 seasons.

In an interview with the Hudson Valley's Times Herald Record, former Cornell assistant, Zach Spiker was asked what was the best advice he ever received in coaching. Spiker responded, "It was over the phone, just a couple of days ago. It was to continue to work like you are an assistant coach. That was from Izzy Metz, an assistant at Hobart [and former Cornell assistant coach]. [Cornell head coach] Steve Don[a]hue prides himself on that. He says, 'Hey, we are all in this together. Let's recruit some players.' That's a pretty good motto."

CollegeHoopsNet.com ranks Seton Hall as the No. 45 team in the nation. Cornell is ranked No. 92. Seton Hall visits Cornell on November 20 and boasts a roster full of major Division I transfers and former high school All-Americans.

Harvard's Jeremy Lin was selected by ESPN.com's Fran Fraschilla as one of the country's most versatile players. We can't argue with Franchilla, the 6'3" Lin is definitely a versatile player. But is he more versatile than Cornell's Louis Dale, the 2007-2008 Ivy League Player of the Year? We contend that Dale is the Ivy's most versatile and dynamic player

A mercurial 5'11" point guard--- Dale doesn't have the gaudy stats of Lin, but he plays on a far deeper and more talented Cornell team which requires him to play and score less.

In Ivy games last season--below is the comparison between Dale and Lin.
Lin- 17.1 points (2nd in Ivy), 5.8 rebounds (6th in Ivy), 3.4 (6th Ivy), FG% .488 (9th Ivy), FT% .688 (15th Ivy), 3 PT% .341 (14th Ivy)

Dale- 13.3 (7th in Ivy), 5.1 rebounds (11th in Ivy), 3.6 assists (5th Ivy), FG%.481 (10th Ivy), FT% .824 (4th Ivy), 3 PT% .367 (11th Ivy)
