News and Notes: Talk of a Two-Bid League Begins...

Below, some news and notes...
  • In Rush The Court's feature "Checking in with the Atlantic 10," RTC writes with respect to St. Joe's, "Coach Martelli’s young squad stretched their losing streak to four on Sunday, dropping a 12-point decision to Cornell. The Big Red are expected to repeat as victors in the Ivy this season and represent the Ivies at the NCAA. "
  • Here at The Cornell Basketball Blog, we are not sure what to make of Harvard's win last night. On the one hand, anytime an Ivy beats an ACC team, it is definitely a very big win. But, it has to be noted that Boston College played the game without its best player, Rakim Sanders. Still, Harvard certainly has our attention. Jon Tannenwald of Philly.com tweets, "I'm not sold on Harvard yet but BC is really bad this year." Tannenwald also tweets that Boston College lost to a St. Joseph's team that Cornell blew out.
  • Further down below in the post we address Cornell's and its opponents' RPI rankings. Last night's action was very, very helpful for Cornell, currently ranked No. 26.
  • Several Tweeters in cyberspace are wondering if the Ivy League is a two-bid league this season. Northstar Basketball tweets, "It's a major longshot, but theres a small chance that the Ivy League gets 2 bids. Cornell & Harvard are both really good & have good resumes." Blogging the Bracket tweets, "Harvard Beats Boston College For Second Straight Season: Two Ivy Bids A Possibility?" And Dana O'Neil of ESPN tweets that Harvard's win, "Should make Ivy League interesting."
The Cornell Men's Basketball Team was expected to run away with the Ivy League this season. Early season results, though, indicate Cornell may find itself in a duel with Harvard for the Ivy League title. The Crimson are 6-2 and one of their losses was a 79-73 loss at no. 14 Connecticut that came down to the last minute. The Crimson also have a triple overtime win against William & Mary. That may not sound like much, but, although it's early, William & Mary's RPI is 13th in the nation and they won at Wake Forest by 10. Harvard is averaging almost ten points a game more than their opponents. Cornell is 7-2 against a grueling schedule but wasn't able to sustain a strong effort for forty minutes against either of the 2 Big East teams it faced, unlike Harvard did against UConn. Also, some of Cornell's games against lesser conference teams have been closer than what might have thought based on Cornell's early season expectations.

Cornell is no doubt a deeper team than Harvard. When you get into Ivy play, Jeff Foote's 7' 265 lb frame becomes much more of a weapon than during the early season. For comparison, Harvard's biggest player, Keith Wright, is only 6-8 and weighs 240. Mark Coury, Jon Jaques, and Adam Wire will punish Ivy League squads that try to double Foote. While Cornell is loaded with three-point shooters, meaning they can get away with one having a bad shooting performance, the Big Red have almost relied too much on the three this year. That means they haven't drawn many fouls and opponents have had a huge advantage in points from the foul line.
  • Author Kathy Orton explained that when she was writing her book Outside the Limelight, "I did fight [with my editors] to keep most of the [details of the] Harvard game at Cornell and the Princeton game at Cornell because those were such dramatic games."
  • Washington Jewish Week references Cornell's Eitan Chemerinski and writes, "Last season, [Jewish Day School of Potomac, Maryland] made it to the Potomac Valley Athletic Conference finals before losing in overtime. The Lions also have lost top scorer Eitan Chemerinksi, now playing college ball at Cornell. JDS relied very heavily on Chemerinski, a 6-foot-8 forward/center, for its offense last year."
  • AuburnPub.com writes, "Syracuse is 8-0, but its last four wins have been against Cornell, Columbia, Colgate and Maine - not exactly the Four Horsemen."
