News and Notes: Big Red No. 33 in the RPI

Below, some news and notes...
  • During the next two weeks, Cornell has an opportunity to pick up some major RPI wins to add to its resume. On Sunday, Cornell faces the No. 78 RPI ranked team in the nation, St. Joseph's. Then between December 20-21 at Madison Square Garden, Cornell gets a game against No. 149 Davidson and a second contest against either No. 6 St. John's or No. 101 Hofstra. Below is a look at Cornell's RPI rank (as of December 4) after a 6-2 start with all of Cornell's opponents also listed (out of 347 Division I teams). Cornell's results against opponents are in parentheses.
6. St. John's
13. Syracuse (L)
33. Cornell
42. Seton Hall (L)
52. Harvard
66. La Salle

  • Tom Pecora, head coach at Hofstra was a guest on Mike Francessa's show on WFAN in New York on December 2. During the interview, Francessa and Pecora discussed the December 20-21 Madison Square Garden Holiday Festival as Pecora explained that his Hofstra team would face either Cornell or Davidson in the championship on December 21 if Hofstra defeated St. John's in the first round. Francessa responded, "I'm sure it will be Davidson... I can't see Cornell having a team...it's an Ivy League team, c'mon."
  • KC Confidential discusses the Kansas Jayhawks' upcoming nonconference opponents and writes, "La Salle, Temple, Cornell and Belmont sure don’t strike fear in anybody."
  • We've said it over and over, Cornell deserves respect. And if they don't already have respect, they will earn it going forward. The Big Red are 6-2 after only one home game. Cornell's only defeats were to a pair of undefeated teams in Syracuse and Seton Hall. Cornell gave Syracuse a tighter game at the Carrier Dome than North Carolina and Cal could put forth on a neutral court against the Orange. Big Red have also claimed wins at Alabama and at UMass. Keep an eye on this Cornell team.
  • Storming the Floor lists the top 10 mid major programs of the decade. No Ivy team is includes, but the site notes, "Penn/Princeton - Had they not split the vote in the pre-Cornell years, we might have had something here." Storming the Floor also lists Penn among the nation's 18 winless teams.
  • WHRB, Harvard's radio station tweets, "Interesting Ivy League CBB stat: Harvard (6-1) and Cornell (6-2) only Ivy teams with winning records. A premonition of league play"
