Recruiting News: More on Errick Peck

The Cornell Basketball Blog reported yesterday that The Big Red received a verbal recruiting commitment from Errick Peck, a 6'6" 210 lbs. combo forward from Cathedral High School in Indianapolis, Indiana. Today we had an opportunity to speak with Peck's high school coach, Scott Hicks.

"I think Errick is good enough to play at the Big 10 level even at his size, he's very athletic, strong basketball IQ, just very smart. I think he is the most underrated player in the state," Hicks told us. "He has a post game, inside 15 feet he is the best player in the state, he can score on the blocks and has a nice 15 foot jumper. He was a four year starter for us and has great strength around the basket." And Hicks knows his Division I talent. Peck was just one of five players on his high school team standing 6'6" or taller. Teammate Kelsey Barlow is headed to Purdue. Cathedral also currently has alums playing at Xavier, Dayton and Indiana State among other D-I programs.

Hicks added, "Errick needs to work on his perimeter play, putting the ball on the floor, if he wants to play on the wing in college, but as a [power forward] he is just a complete player, very efficient, shot 56% from the field for us, lets the game come to him, he is just very coachable, Cornell got itself a gem."

Hicks was also able to give The Cornell Basketball Blog some detail on Peck's college recruitment. "He had a lot of scholarship offers," Hicks noted. Hicks confirmed that Peck turned down scholarships from a long list of schools including Akron, Cleveland State, Kent State, Colorado State, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Loyola-Chicago, Middle Tennessee State, IUFW, Butler, Missouri State, and Evansville and Wisconsin-Green Bay. Hicks also emphasized that Penn State and Saint Louis were very interested and could have offered if Peck remained available longer. Peck also drew interest from Stanford, Colgate, Miami (Oh.), Marquette, Harvard, Boston University, and Cincinnati among others.

Hicks noted that Peck took visits to Akron and Loyola-Chicago before ultimately selecting Cornell.

As a senior at Cathedral, Peck averaged 14.4 points and 11.1 rebounds per game and was identified by Rick Bolus' High Potential Basketball Recruiting Service, Inc. as one of the top two dozen seniors in Indiana.

As a junior, Peck was Second Team All Indianapolis by the Indianapolis Star. As a senior, he was selected First Team All-City by the City Coaches Association. GoldandBlack.com (a Purdue fan website) evaluated Peck during July 2008 and referred to him as a "a bouncy, irrepressible rebounder and inside scorer...[a] 6-6, 205-pound forward...[he] plays like a power forward, but being a few inches short of the prototype for that position in college, he's looking to diversify." Peck told GoldandBlack, "I've played the 4/5 my whole life, but I've worked all summer trying to get my handle up because in college, I might have to be like a big 3." Kyle Neddenriep of the Indianapolis Star commented, the "question about Peck playing on the next level is whether he can develop his game facing the basket."

Indiana Hoops evaluated him as follows:
On many evenings, Peck is a beast, a man-child, and man amongst boys. His 6'6" frame is filled out solid muscle, and with his strength and supreme athleticism, he often simply overpowers and outleaps opposing big men. He does seem to coast on occasion, however, but if he ever brings it consistently, there is no doubt he is D1. He could be compared to other great undersized, high motor power forwards like Jason Maxiell or Leon Powe. He has has monster games this year, including his most recent outing, a 28 point and 16 rebound performance against Howe.
In another evaluation, Indiana Hoops reported about Peck, "He is a 6'6 power forward who is a superior athlete with solid post moves and has a nice mid-range shot. He is great defender and shot blocker, and he is one of the strongest players in the area. Peck would likely be a big-time D1 recruit if he were just two or three inches taller."

Peck played AAU basketball with Spiece Rising Stars which includes among its alumni, Greg Oden (Portland Trailblazers), Mike Conley (Memphis Grizzlies), Daequan Cook (Miami Heat).
