Alumni News: The Forgotten Big Red Player (Updated 9:44 A.M.)

The Phildelphia Inquirer is reporting the passing of Harry Middleton, Cornell '48. According to the obituary, Mr. Middleton was was the first freshman to start for the Cornell varsity basketball team. When we initially attempted to gather some information on Mr. Middleton, we noticed that the Cornell Athletics website has no record of Mr. Middleton earning a varsity letter at Cornell and provides no statistics for him. Although, the website does have stats for player from the teams of the 1940s.

But fortunately, here at The Cornell Basketball Blog, we have our historian on staff, Corey Ryan Earle and we learned that Mr. Middleton did in fact play for the Big Red. He earned a J.V. letter in 1943 and did play on the varsity as a freshman with his "smart" ball handling, "good set shot" and expertise on "cut plays."
