Recruiting News: Breaking News, Cornell Receives Two Verbal Commitments

Miles Asafo-Adjei (top) and Errick Peck (bottom) both gave verbal commitments to attend Cornell next season.

According to the Nashville's Tennessean, Miles Asafo-Adjei has committed to play basketball at Cornell after visiting the campus over his spring break. The Cornell Basketball Blog confirmed the report with several sources close to the situation.

Asafo-Adjei is a 6'1" point guard from The Ensworth School in Nashville. He is described by Scouts Inc./ESPN as a "quick point guard who takes the ball from point A to point B very quickly. He makes good moves to the basket and can set up teammates or score it himself." Meanwhile, Tennessee Preps Hoops calls him "without question the best on ball defender in the state." Hoopscooponline observed him during July 2008 at the Top 30 All-Star Game in the High Potential "Blue Chip" Basketball Camp at Georgetown College in Georgetown, Kentucky. Clark Francis of HoopScoop commented, "Asafo-Adjel has great body control and athleticism, which allows him to score in a variety of ways."

Asafo-Adjei's high school coach, Richard Bowers told The Cornell Basketball Blog that Asafo-Adjei "always wanted to play at a place like Cornell" and that he also considered top academic schools such as Columbia and Furman before choosing Cornell. "His intensity of play is obvious to anyone that sees him... with his defensive intensity and ability to slash the ball to the basketball. He has exceptional quickness... there was nobody that we played that could stop him from getting to the basket," said Bowers. Bowers explained that the one area where Asafo-Adjei needed to improve was a build up of his strength. Familiar with Division I talent, Bowers added that The Ensworth School has two other players headed to play collegiate basketball next season, including a commitment to Middle Tennessee State. "Miles is just a remarkable ambassador for our school, he is very engaging, just a hardworking person," said Bowers.

The Big Red also received a verbal commitment from Errick Peck, a 6'6" 210 lbs. combo forward from Cathedral High School in Indianapolis, Indiana. Peck played AAU basketball with Spiece Rising Stars. As a senior at Cathedral he averaged 14.4 points and 11.1 rebounds per game and was identified by Rick Bolus' High Potential Basketball Recruiting Service, Inc. as one of the top two dozen seniors in Indiana. Peck turned down scholarships offered during the summer of 2008 from Butler, Missouri State, and Evansville, as well as a later offer from Wisconsin-Green Bay. He also drew interest from Stanford, Penn State, Saint Louis University, Loyola-Chicago, Colgate, Miami (Oh.), Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Marquette, Harvard, Boston University, Akron, Kent State, Indiana State, Cincinnati, Colorado State and IPFW.

As a junior, Peck was Second Team All Indianapolis by the Indianapolis Star. As a senior, he was selected First Team All-City by the City Coaches Association. GoldandBlack.com (a Purdue fan website) evaluated Peck during July 2008 and referred to him as a "a bouncy, irrepressible rebounder and inside scorer...[a] 6-6, 205-pound forward...[he] plays like a power forward, but being a few inches short of the prototype for that position in college, he's looking to diversify." Peck told GoldandBlack, "I've played the 4/5 my whole life, but I've worked all summer trying to get my handle up because in college, I might have to be like a big 3." Kyle Neddenriep of the Indianapolis Star commented, the "question about Peck playing on the next level is whether he can develop his game facing the basket."

Indiana Hoops evaluated him as follows:
On many evenings, Peck is a beast, a man-child, and man amongst boys. His 6'6" frame is filled out solid muscle, and with his strength and supreme athleticism, he often simply overpowers and outleaps opposing big men. He does seem to coast on occasion, however, but if he ever brings it consistently, there is no doubt he is D1. He could be compared to other great undersized, high motor power forwards like Jason Maxiell or Leon Powe. He has has monster games this year, including his most recent outing, a 28 point and 16 rebound performance against Howe.
In another evaluation, Indiana Hoops reported about Peck, "He is a 6'6 power forward who is a superior athlete with solid post moves and has a nice mid-range shot. He is great defender and shot blocker, and he is one of the strongest players in the area. Peck would likely be a big-time D1 recruit if he were just two or three inches taller."

Peck was just one of five players on his high school team standing 6'6" or taller. Teammate Kelsey Barlow is headed to Purdue.

Miles Asafo-Adjei and Errick Peck, join Josh Figini (6'8" Chisago Lakes MN HS), Peter McMillan (6'7" Brentwood CA Northfield MA Northfield Mt Hermon School) and Eitan Chemerinski (6'8" Potomac MD Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School) in Cornell's recruiting class entering in 2009.

So where does all this leave Cornell's 2009-2010 recruiting class? Well, sources report that Cornell is still "opportunistically" recruiting players (either from the high school ranks or college transfers) which may be "too good to pass up." Several of these types are in play. Keep reading The Cornell Basketball Blog to find out more!
