News and Notes: Around the Ivy League

Above, Cornell has really enjoyed Selection Sunday the last two years. The Big Red made trips to the 2008 and 2009 NCAA Tournaments and hopes to make it three in a row during 2010. Below, some news and notes around the Ivy League.
  • Cornell's season opening opponent, Alabama, had a tough time last night in an exhibition game. See the stories below:
  • Birmingham News-"Red alert: An Alabama basketball team that barely defeated an NCAA Division II team in its final exhibition game Tuesday night opens its regular season at 1 p.m. Saturday against a Cornell team that has played in the NCAA tournament the past two seasons. New coach Anthony Grant sounded an alarm. "Maybe this is a wakeup call for our guys to understand that we have a very slim margin of error for us to have any chance to be successful," he said after his team needed six free throws in the final 30 seconds to defeat Augusta State 61-55."
  • Alabama Basketball Blog-"With an extremely tough Cornell team coming in Saturday for the season opener, Alabama has a lot to work on if it wants to emerge a victor on Saturday."
  • CollegeHoopsNet.com previews the NYC metro area teams, Columbia, Princeton and Yale and notes specifically with respect to Princeton, "Head coach Sydney Johnson has a solid core at his disposal in guards Doug Davis and Dan Mavraides, and forward/center Pawel Buczak. But whether or not the Tigers can pose a serious threat to two-time defending Ivy champ Cornell will depend on what they can get from other "sources". That means that players such as guards Marcus Schroeder and Nick Lake, and forwards Zach Finley, Kareem Maddox and Patrick Saunders will need to up their productions. That gets done and they'll have the best shot of the seven challengers to dethrone the Big Red."
  • The Daily Princetonian reviews the Tigers' schedule and notes, "Princeton will host Columbia and two-time defending Ivy champion Cornell in succession. At Jadwin last season, the Tigers topped Columbia by 28 and Cornell by 20. Still, the Big Red beat the Tigers by nine in Ithaca, N.Y., last season. Columbia also fared well at home, topping the Tigers, 58-44, in Manhattan. Against the Big Red, the Tigers will have their hands full with reigning Ivy Rookie of the Year guard Chris Wroblewski, reigning Ivy Defender of the Year center Jeff Foote and two first-team All-Ivy players in guard Louis Dale and forward Ryan Wittman."
  • The Daily Princetonian indicates that the Tigers have "high hopes" for the season and writes, "Last year, the men’s basketball team got off to a fast start in Ivy League competition with wins over Dartmouth and Harvard before hosting Cornell, the reigning league champion and winner of 19 consecutive Ivy contests. Princeton never trailed in its 61-41 thrashing of the Big Red on Feb. 6. As head coach Sydney Johnson ’97 and his players emphasized at the time, the victory was only one league win. And sure enough, Cornell still went on to capture the Ivy crown... Cornell remains the prohibitive favorite in the Ivy League, with All-Ivy guard Louis Dale and All-Ivy forward Ryan Wittman returning. As if it weren’t enough, the Big Red also has the reigning Defensive Player of the Year in center Jeff Foote and last year’s Rookie of the Year in guard Chris Wroblewski. Princeton got a little taste of what Cornell has enjoyed for the past several years: success...Aside from the Big Red, the league is wide open."
When I spoke to Seton Hall coach Bobby Gonzalez last month at Big East Media Day, he was the first one to admit that his players needed to take care of themselves off the court. The talent level is there with guys like Herb Pope and Keon Lawrence eligible after sitting out the season after transferring. Well, it hasn't taken long. Lawrence caused a wrong-way crash on the Garden State Parkway and has been charged with driving while intoxicated and with a suspended license. Lawrence, 22, drove the wrong way in the southbound express lanes and hit another vehicle early Monday. Not exactly the start that Gonzalez was hoping for.
  • Cornell's December 20 first round opponent in the Madison Square Garden Holiday Festival, Davidson, is preparing for life without Stephen Curry. On a related note, the MSG Holiday Festival is now receiving its corporate sponsorship from Foot Locker. A year ago it was Aeropostale. Cornell plays either St. John's or Hofstra on December 21.
