First-year head coach Anthony Grant makes his regular-season debut on the Crimson Tide bench after leading the Tide to a pair of exhibition wins over Montevallo and Augusta State. However, UA will face a formidable challenge in its season opener as Cornell travels to Tuscaloosa as the reigning two-time Ivy League champions.

“It’s a very tough game to open the season considering the success that they’ve had and the caliber of team they have coming back,” Grant said. “It’s a very deep team and a very well coached team. It’ll be a challenge for us, but we’re excited about getting on the court and starting the season.”

Last season, the Big Red posted a 21-10 record and return all five starters and 11 veteran players from that team including 2007-08 Ivy League Player of the Year and Birmingham, Ala., native Louis Dale. Ryan Wittman returns as the team’s top scorer after posting 18.5 points per game last season for 10th-year head coach Steve Donahue.

Grant, who won three conference titles in his three previous seasons at VCU, has four returning starters from last season and seven veteran players at his disposal for his maiden season in Tuscaloosa. Preseason all-SEC selection JaMychal Green led the team in its preseason games averaging 15 points and eight rebounds in the games. Of the bench, junior sharpshooter Charvez Davis posted 9.5 points per game in the preseason.

Saturday’s game is the second in the series between the Crimson Tide and Big Red with Alabama winning the previous meeting, 107-84, on December 1, 1972 in Winston-Salem, N.C. That contest was also the season opener for both squads. The Tide is 7-1 in its previous eight meetings with Ivy League teams with the lone loss coming to Princeton during the 1975-76 season.

Following Saturday’s game, the Tide will continue its non-conference schedule against Jackson State on Tuesday, November 17 at 7:30 p.m. at Coleman Coliseum. Tickets for all home non-conference games are $12 for adults and $8 for youth tickets. Tickets can be purchased by clicking here or by calling the athletic ticket office at 205-348-BAMA.
